MACEY SANDFORD

PH.D | PLANETARY SCIENTIST | EXPLORER

ABOUT ME.

Macey is a passionate planetary scientist and explorer. She is a recent PhD graduate from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Earth and Planetary Sciences. Her dissertation titled “Innovative Remote Spectroscopy Techniques for Planetary Exploration" explores the use of remote Raman spectroscopy and onboard spectral prioritization algorithms for future planetary missions. She obtained her B.S. in physics with minors in mathematics and French language at the University of Mary Washington in Frederisckburg, V.A. Following graduation, Macey moved to Hawaii to pursue her PhD while obtaining a M.S. in Geology and Geophysics en route. Her master’s degree explored the development and use of a cloud screening algorithm to be used on Earth orbiting satellites. Photography, travel, hiking, climbing, and cycling are a few of the activities that drive Macey outside of her planetary passions, though the drive to explore is always present.
